All My Children' plays at the Marsh Berkeley

Solo show asks: Who's your daddy?

Matt Smith first got the idea for a solo show about a middle-aged bachelor who tells his ex-girlfriends' children that he is their real father when he pulled the same prank on his niece.
"It was just for fun," explains Smith, 58, a leading comic writer and performer from Seattle. The idea became the basis for a 20-minute monologue funded by Seattle's Richard Hugo House that has emerged as a weirdly comic and compelling 90-minute solo show called "All My Children," which opens Friday at the Marsh Berkeley.

Smith plays Matt Poth, a deranged though seemingly sensible person who finds the six children of his six ex-girlfriends and befriends them through his supposed paternal relationship. His performance has been viewed as so convincing that some audience members assume the show is autobiographical (and approach him afterward with their own complicated family stories).
