Ryan Gosling has portrayed some dark characters in films like "Half Nelson" and "Blue Valentine," but when he got burnt out on the intense roles, the actor decided he needed some diversity.
"This was my first attempt [at comedy] but I had been getting pretty stressed out with the films I was doing before," Gosling said in an interview provided by Warner Brothers Pictures. "I was at my doctor and I think as a joke, he wrote as a prescription, 'do a comedy.' So I took his advice, and I do feel better!"
In the movie, Steve Carell stars as a man struggling to regain his confidence after his wife (Julianne Moore) asks for a divorce. A ladies man (Ryan Gosling) steps in to help and accidentally falls for a witty red head (Emma Stone).
"He fancies himself a lothario," Gosling said of his character. "He thinks he's got it all figured out and then he meets this man named Cal Weaver, who is just recently divorced and not taking very good care of himself and he sort of takes Cal on as a project and probably ends up learning more from Cal at the end of the day."
Gosling made headlines for his sculpted abdominal muscles, which prompted the line, "You look like you're Photoshopped." The actor said that though the abs are indeed real, he had to work for them.
"I exercised a lot for the film," Gosling said. "I made muscles. It did say it in the script, so I tried to get there. It was fun to try, I guess."
e admitted that there is one thing he won't do again for a movie.
"I put on a lot of weight for a role once, I put on like 40 pounds or something and I never wanted to do that again, I've read it in scripts since and said 'No, I just can't do that again,'" Gosling said. "In the beginning it's fun because you're just going crazy, but then I would have to melt Haagen Daz pints and drink them when I was thirsty and then I could make my fat into things... I could make little fat cities, little fat people. That wasn't fun. I tried to make a game out of it, but that wasn't fun. I felt terrible."
In December, Gosling said he had been fired from Peter Jackson's 2009 film "The Lovely Bones" after gaining 60 pounds so he could play a grieving father, a character the actor thought should be fatter, a move which he said left him "fat and unemployed."
The actor will next appear opposite George Clooney in "The Ides of March," which is slated for release on October 7, 2011.
Gosling will also star opposite his "Crazy Stupid Love" co-star Emma Stone in the upcoming 1940s cop drama "Gangster Squad." In the film, Stone plays a "a sharp-tongued siren caught in a love triangle" between a drug-dealer played by Sean Penn and a cop played by Ryan Gosling, according to Variety
