Barack Obama issues plea after US GDP shock

0

Barack Obama warned that America's prized triple-A rating is in jeopardy and that the country is "almost out of time" to agree a deficit deal as GDP data showed the moribund state of the US economy.
Fears that a recovery in the world's biggest economy is running out of steam were heightened as official figures showed GDP in the US rising 1.3pc in the second quarter, against expectations of a 1.8pc rise. In a chastening statement the Commerce Department also downgraded first-quarter growth from an initial estimate of 1.9pc to just 0.4pc.
Mr Obama said the poor pace of growth further raised the pressure on Democrat and Republican politicians to come to a consensus over raising the $14.3 trillion (£8.7 trillion) deficit ceiling.
"The power to solve this is in our hands on a day when we've been reminded how fragile the economy already is," he said. "If we do not come to an agreement, we could lose our country's triple-A credit rating... because we did not have a triple-A political system to match."

The extent of the uncertainty hanging over the US economy was underlined as the head of the World Bank warned that politicians were courting "calamity" by not coming to an agreement ahead of a deadline on Tuesday next week. "To be blunt, to have a debt default in the United States would not only be a financial calamity but should be an embarrassment for every American," said Robert Zoellick.
The Commerce Department also said household spending had risen at an annual rate of just 0.1pc in the second quarter, prompting fears that high unemployment and a lack of wage growth could mean any resurgence in consumer spending is unlikely to materialise at all in 2011.

Brickyard 400 drivers still say Indy hasn't lost its luster

0

If the Brickyard 400 has lost some of its allure among racing fans, which half-empty grandstands at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year and probably again Sunday would seem to indicate, that isn’t the case for the 43 teams and drivers taking part in NASCAR’s 18th visit to Indy.
Starting with pole winner David Ragan and continuing throughout the field, the overwhelming sentiment is that other than the Daytona 500, there’s still no other race they’d rather win than the Brickyard.
“There’s only a couple tracks on our schedule that when you walk into the track you feel the history of the facility,” said three-time winner Jimmie Johnson, who will start third today. “This is one of them.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, knows what it meant to his famous father to win the 1995 Brickyard. Earnhardt will start 22nd as he tries to figure out a track on which he has just two top-10 finishes in 11 tries.

“Everyone wants to win at this race,” he said. “Everyone wants to go through the process they have at post race, the celebration and the unique thing that they do here.
“I’ve read about the history and how this place has survived two world wars and how it was basically the proving grounds for the automobile back in the turn of the century. I would love to be able to say I’ve won a race here. It’s at the top of the list.”

US Special Operations Chief Olson warns of 'next generation' Al-Qaeda 2.0

0

Washington, July 29 (ANI): U.S. Special Operations top commander Admiral Eric T. Olson has said Al Qaeda is 'bloodied' and is "nearing its end," but warned that its next generation, Al Qaeda 2.0 could keep the forces fighting for a decade.

Admiral Olson described the killing of Bin Laden at Abbottabad raid on May 2 as a "near-killing blow" for, what he called "Al Qaeda 1.0," as created by Bin Laden and led from his hideout in Pakistan.

Olson said the group had already lost steam as Arab Spring revolts proved that the Muslim world did not need Al Qaeda to topple governments from Tunisia to Egypt.

"I think the death of bin Laden was an upper cut to the jaw. It just knocked them on their heels"; Fox News quoted Olsen, as saying at the Aspen Security Forum.

Olson warned of the fight to come against what he called Al Qaeda 2.0, with new leaders like American-born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen, who, according to Olson, understands America better than Americans understand him.

He said Al Qaeda operatives like al-Awlaki would refine their message to appeal to a wider audience, and seek ungoverned spaces to operate from, where they can smuggle in weapons and train their followers.

Olson also described how current offshoots like al-Awlaki's, Al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen are cooperating with militants in Somalia, forming an "invisible bridge" between the two.

Olson agreed with the White House's newly announced policy to strike terrorists through focused action rather than full-scale invasion, preferably by training and working with the host country's forces. He cautioned against thinking that raids would solve all U.S. foreign policy problems.

Shark Week never gets old

0

Shark Week has been around for 24 years. That’s a long time. Not as long as the millions of years that sharks have existed, but in terms of pop culture, it’s an eternity.
Back in 1987, millions of Americans still didn’t have cable TV. The Fox Network had just been born. “The Cosby Show” reigned supreme in the ratings. The No. 1 song on Aug. 1, 1987, was “Shakedown” by Bob Seger from the soundtrack to “Beverly Hills Cop II,” the biggest movie of a summer that would see the release of “Dirty Dancing,” “RoboCop,” “The Lost Boys,” “Withnail & I,” “The Witches of Eastwick,” “Ishtar” and the truly unforgettable “Ernest Goes to Camp.”
This year, Discovery’s indefatigable series returns with its own Chief Shark Officer, comedian Andy Samberg of “Saturday Night Live” fame. He’s aided by the network’s shark expert Andy Dehart, who actually knows a thing or two about the ancient predators.
Shark Week endures because of (or in spite of) the remarkable sameness of its offerings. How many times can people watch documentaries like “Great White Invasion” (8 p.m.) or “Jaws Comes Home” (9 p.m.)? Apparently, as often as Discovery broadcasts them!
• Shark Week generates a lot of competition. There’s practically a “Whale Week” going on, if you take into account Saturday night’s “Moby Dick” adaptation on Syfy and the Melville-inspired miniseries beginning on Encore on Monday. You knew Animal Planet couldn’t lose its viewers to the sharks, so it dreamed up “Heidi Fleiss: Prostitutes to Parrots” (9 p.m.).

The one-hour special (which probably could have used the word “from” in its title) chronicles the efforts of the former Hollywood madam to stay clean and sober. She’s aided in her effort by more than 20 wild macaws that fill her home with love, music and guano.
• A cop (Rachael Carpani) takes a job with internal affairs, infuriating her family of cops in the new series “Against the Law” (9 p.m., Lifetime).

Famous Spanish restaurant El Bulli shuts, for now AP

0

ROSES, Spain (AP) — El Bulli, one of the world's most acclaimed and award-winning eateries, served its last supper Saturday.
On the final menu were 50 dishes with intriguing names like "Clam Meringue," ''Olive Spheres," and "Hot Cold Gin Fizz."
For more than half of the 24 years that virtuoso chef Ferran Adria has been in charge of its kitchen, the restaurant has maintained the almost unattainable Michelin three-star status and been rated the world's best restaurant five times by British magazine The Restaurant.
After a final dinner and drinks party for faithful clients and staff families, Adria will close down the restaurant and begin turning it into a top level cuisine foundation he hopes to open in 2014.
"People think I should be sad but I feel the happiest man in the world," said Adria. "El Bulli is not closing. It's just transforming."
He himself will not be sitting at a table for dinner on the final night.
"No, I'll be cooking!" he said.
El Bulli's location in a beautiful and isolated seaside cove on Spain's far northeastern tip inspired Adria, who started off as a hotel dishwasher, to think about the essence of what makes food taste delicious, prompting him to deconstruct ingredients to what he calls the molecular level.
He would then reconstruct each dish using unexpected re-combinations of the original components, presenting them in mouthful-sized portions.
Most required instructions on how to eat them, sometimes with bare hands.
Food took on unexpected shapes, textures and temperatures as the chef used liquid nitrogen to produce vegetable or fruit foam, airy, ethereal reincarnations of solid food, combining seaweed and tea, or caviar with jellied apples.
His "bunuelo de llebre" is a small ball whose external surface is a chilled delicate pastry that conceals "hot liquid hare which you must bite into with your lips closed," enabling its caramel-like taste to explode inside your mouth.

The restaurant's average price of euro270 ($388) per head — not including drinks, tax or tips — was another of its distinctive features.
The diner could boast more than a million reservation requests yearly at a place that seated just 50 and opened for dinner only, usually just six months a year

Pottermore? Nevermore. Radcliffe: It would be 'self-defeating' to reprise role

0

LOS ANGELES -- What's J.K. Rowling about to announce with the mysterious "Pottermore" project? Daniel Radcliffe says he's in the dark on the topic, and, yes, he's quite ready to say goodbye to the boy wizard at this point anyway.

"I know nothing about that whatsoever," Radcliffe said of the cryptic new website that is meant to stir interest in the June 23 announcement of some new endeavor. "I'm sure that Jo will be writing a lot more in the coming years. I'm sure she has a lot more in her than we've read and a lot more stories to tell."

And he added, with a bit of a chuckle: "As long as they don't involve Harry, I'm quite happy to buy them."

The was a great stir of interest in the muggle world in recent days with news coverage of the website, which is so far just a holding page with two owls, the word "Pottermore" and the signature of Rowling, the author who mesmerized readers the world over with the magical tales of an orphaned boy wizard, his friends and the dark forces aligned against them.

The bookshelf chronicles of Harry Potter reached a climax in 2007 with the seventh and reportedly final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," and the Hollywood feature-film franchise draws to a close this summer with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," the eighth film, which opens in the U.S. and U.K. on July 15.

There's plenty of speculation about the nature of "Pottermore," but the most likely might be an MMORPG, an online fan-community experience or a hybrid of both. Rowling's spokeswoman has stated that the project is "not a new book" and is not "directly related" to the impending "Potter" film.

Kate Middleton: What she wore to Zara Phillips' wedding

0

The bride wore white and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, wore bone. Or ivory. Or ecru. Whatever it was, it was stunning and managed to flatter her trim figure without outshining Zara Phillips, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth who married longtime boyfriend Mike Tindall Saturday (July 30) in Edinburgh, Scotland.

We've seen Kate in this coat before. According to whatkatewore.com, the duchess donned the same brocade coat at the 2006 wedding of Laura Parker Bowles and Harry Lopes and last year at the wedding of Mel Nicholson and Oli Baker, whoever they are.

Kate's dress, too, was a well-picked retread. She wore it to that same Parker Bowles wedding and to a 2007 book signing.

The hat, we're given to understand, is new. And quite fetching.

‘Untitled’ by Anonymous Book Compels Literary Guessing Game, Creates Buzz

0

We know it’s called Untitled and it’s written by Anonymous (not that Anonymous), but all else is a mystery about a new book that’s creating a frick-ton of buzz in the literary world.
A brief description of the late fall release indicates little about the book, mainly mentioning that the book will be centered on a “controversial,” real-life person (thought to be Bernie Madoff):
“Untitled,” by Anonymous, was described as a 320-page, nonfiction, hardcover book with photos that will retail at $26.99. Order the book now, the publisher said, to ensure delivery by its November release date.
It is, the e-mail said, “the inside story of life with one of the most controversial figures of our time.”
Of course, the buzz surrounding the tome tends to be a bit hyperbolic-  two likely authors for the book, one of whom won’t comment without publisher permission. Catherine Hooper and Laurie Sandell are thought to have written the mysterious title, the former being the “mysterious, dark haired fiancee” of Bernie Madoff’s son Andrew Madoff.

“Untitled” by Anonymous is due out smack in the middle of November, and one bookseller spoke to the NYT about the shadowy release:

Soulja Boy buys a $55 million jet for his 21st birthday

0

Soulja Boy turned 21 on Thursday, and like any young working man, he marked the occasion by buying himself a nice birthday present: a tricked-out jet, a Gulfstream G5 with a $55-million price tag.
The rapper's management confirmed the purchase on Friday,  TMZ that Soulja Boy added $20 million in upgrades to the plane, base price $35 million.
How can a person spend $20 million inside an airplane, other than ordering lunch when the flight attendants come around with the food-for-purchase? Think travertine floors, Brazilian hardwood floors, Italian leather seats and -- now that the entertainer is 21 -- four liquor bars.
Oh, add a custom paint job too, with the Soulja Boy logo.

The rapper, who hit big in 2007 with the single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," is also dropping a reported $300,000 on his birthday party Friday night, but he might make some of that money back. According to his birthday-bash website, fans who pay $2.99 for the pay per view can watch him and his "celebrity friends" show up for and partake in the red-carpet event.

Hideki Irabu Remembered As Fun Teammate By Derek Jeter, Yankees

0

NEW YORK — Hideki Irabu's famous teammates on the New York Yankees remembered him Friday as a talented pitcher who was fun to be around.

The club held a moment of silence for Irabu at Yankee Stadium before Friday night's game against Baltimore, one day after news of his death spread. A picture of Irabu tipping his cap to the crowd was shown on the big video board in center field.

Los Angeles County Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter told The Associated Press in an email Friday that the 42-year-old Irabu died by hanging himself, and the mode was suicide. He said Irabu did not leave a note.

"It's really devastating. I got to know him real well," longtime Yankees star Jorge Posada said. "A guy that came out here with a lot riding on his shoulders, but he did a hell of a job for us. Tough times."

Winter said a friend found Irabu dead in his home in the wealthy Los Angeles suburb of Rancho Palos Verdes on Wednesday afternoon.

Winter said an autopsy was performed Friday, but it will take six to eight weeks for the results of toxicology tests, which could shed further light on the circumstances of Irabu's death.

"I was caught off guard, to say the least," Derek Jeter said. "Irabu was fun. He didn't speak a lot of English, but he probably knew more than he led you guys to believe."

The hard-throwing Japanese right-hander arrived in New York amid a wave of international hype in 1997, but faltered after an impressive debut.

Still, he had his moments on the mound. Posada recalled catching a game in which Irabu outpitched Randy Johnson with a gem in Seattle.

Knights Templar Used In Criminal Crusades

0

A bright red cross marked the cover of a manifesto purportedly written by the suspect in last week's terror attacks in Norway.
Nearly 6,000 miles away, Mexican police seized white robes emblazoned with the same symbol in a series of raids aimed at cracking down on one of the country's newest drug cartels. The Knights Templar -- warriors during the medieval holy wars known as the Crusades -- wore the cross insignia as they went into battle. Its red color represented the blood of Christian martyrs.

The recent modern-day interpretations of the crusaders' ancient cause wouldn't sit well with the original Knights Templar, according to British historian and novelist Piers Paul Read."They'd have been horrified. ... They were very devout people," said Read, who detailed the knights' history in his book "The Templars."The knights began in the 12th century as a religious order fighting Muslims and protecting Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land. They mostly came from Western Europe and took strict vows of poverty, Read said. But over time, their organization amassed significant wealth and property, drawing ire from citizens and royalty alike.Amid accusations of heresy and devil-worship from France's king, the pope dissolved the order in 1312, Read said.

The group's last leader was burned at the stake, but the story of the Knights Templar lives on, portrayed in films and popular fiction such as "The Da Vinci Code."

Rachel Maddow Reacts to Keith Olbermann Exiting MSNBC

News that MSNBC's Keith Olbermann was exiting Friday evening was shocking, to say the least.

"Yeah, it's been a big day at MSNBC or at least it's been a big 15 minutes," Maddow stated plainly when Maher told her he found out moments ago that Olbermann was leaving.
When Maher asked what had happened, all Maddow said was that it was "between Keith and the company, it didn't involve any of the rest of us."

"Stop organizing life around the people who don't get the joke," Maher said later when discussing Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World" segment. "F--- them if they don't get a joke."

Eric Cantor: House Will Stay Open Over The Weekend, Threatens Democrats With Default

0

Majority leader Eric Cantor has announced that the House of Representatives will remain in session throughout the weekend as the debt ceiling crisis continues to produce no results.

The House will meet on Saturday and Sunday and votes will start at 1 p.m. EDT. Some votes may occur on late Friday since lawmakers will not be returning to their home districts.

Among votes for Thursday is a plan proposed by speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) which aims to reduce the debt ceiling and then increase the countries $14.29 trillion debt ceiling in two phases. Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) has already said that the Senate will block that bill immediately.

In remarks directed at the Democratic party on Thursday Cantor told Harry Reid and his party that they needed to accept what was being given to them or “face the consequences.”

According to Cantor:

“Harry Reid has three different options,” while adding,  ”One is to suffer the economic consequences of default, which all of us hope he doesn’t choose. Two is to bring up the bill we sent prior … or to accept the compromise bill that we are sending over today…”

Sadly nobody wins when both parties are attempting to strong arm each other into bills that neither side is willing to accept.

Nintendo product flop crushes shares, outlook crumbles

0

TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo's shocking profit battered its shares as much as 20 percent, underscoring deep challenges for an iconic brand struggling to win back users flocking to other gadgets.
The plunge wiped off $5 billion from Nintendo's market value after the company said profits would fall to their lowest in 27 years as it braced for losses from its latest 3D gadget.
Brokers cut the company's forecasts, a day after it swung to a quarterly loss and slashed prices of its 3D-capable handheld games device by about a third.
With sales of its DS and Wii fading, Nintendo was relying on the new 3D model to revive profits and fend off renewed competition from motion-gaming peripherals of Sony Corp and Microsoft. Many casual gamers are also flocking to devices such as Apple's blockbuster iPhone and iPad.
"They are standing on the edge," said Yuuki Sakurai, CEO and president of Fukoku Capital Management in Tokyo. "When I ride on the trains I see people using their smartphones to play games and people don't want to overlap their spending on other devices," he said.
The Kyoto-based company must consider providing games to these new platforms rather than focusing on new hardware, Sakurai said.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata took a 50 percent pay cut, and other executives took 20-30 percent cuts to take responsibility for the poor performance.
The company also reduced sales forecasts for its Wii home games console and the previous generation DS handheld device.
"We needed to do something extremely daring to change the situation, so we decided on the price-cut," said Iwata, a former game designer, who launched the Wii and expanded the gaming population, toppling Sony from the industry's top spot.
Nintendo's shares fell as much 20 percent on Friday to 11,100 yen, its lowest intraday level since May 2004. They ended down 12.2 percent on the day, for a drop this year of nearly 50 percent.
Speaking to reporters in Osaka on Thursday, Iwata acknowledged sales of the much-anticipated 3DS had lost momentum shortly after the launch earlier this year.
"However, by cutting the price before you get economies of scale, of course you make losses on the hardware," he said.

Nintendo sold only 710,000 units of the 3DS in April-June, compared with 3.6 million in the month following its launch, and a tiny fraction of the 16 million unit target for the year to March 2012.
The Wii sold only 1.56 million units, half the figure in the same period last year. The device took the industry by storm five years ago by replacing button clicking with motion control, attracting a new wave of gamers that expanded the market.

Casey Anthony Mask Fetches Nearly $1 Million on eBay

0

Apparently the public’s thirst for all things related to Casey Anthony knows no bounds as a latex mask resembling the recently acquitted “tot mom” sold on eBay for nearly $1 million.

In the item description of the latex Anthony mask, the seller said it was one of only nine “sculpted to precision for a parody video by enigmatic pop artist/sculptor Torro.”

“Forget Freddy, Jason, Meyers, here’s your chance to scare the *#&% out of everyone and win every costume contest with this amazing Tot Mom latex rubber mask, possibly the most frightening mask on the planet. And I can almost guarantee it’s the ‘only’ Casey mask on the planet,” the eBay description read.

The mask itself shows a relatively expressionless Anthony – a look that she became famous for as she stood on trial for the the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee – staring straight ahead, lips and mouth closed and her hair tied back in her signature pony tail.

The winning 105th bid, which was placed on Wednesday at 6:33pm EST, was totaled at $999,900. The buyer’s identity was kept confidential by eBay for obvious reasons –  he/she has more money than sense.

Emma Stone says working with Ryan Gosling in 'Crazy Stupid Love' was 'the worst'

0

Emma Stone stars in the upcoming film "Crazy, Stupid, Love," and joked about the grueling task of having to play Gosling's love interest in the comedy.
"It was the worst," Stone joked of her co-star in an interview provided by Warner Brother Pictures. "He can't act and he doesn't have that face, which is a real bummer, and we didn't have any fun at all. There was a lot of crying and a lot of physical violence toward each other. Needless to say, I struggled through the whole process, but I came out stronger for it and now here I sit, with a restraining order against him in the other room."
The 22-year-old actress was the envy of many when she got a front-row seat to co-star Ryan Gosling's abs in the comedy.
"That line was in the script, 'you look like you're Photoshopped,' so that has to be some pressure as an actor to have your character described as looking 'Photoshopped,'" Stone said. "And he definitely was a professional."
In the movie, Steve Carell stars as a man struggling to regain his confidence after his wife (Julianne Moore) asks for a divorce. A ladies man (Ryan Gosling) steps in to help and accidentally falls for a witty red head (Emma Stone).

Alexander McQueen Leaves $82,000 Each to His Dogs

0

Alexander McQueen, the high-fashion designer who died last year at the age of 40, has made an unusual provision in his will.

McQueen hanged himself a day before the funeral of his mother, and his body was found by one of his two housekeepers. The designer had taken a cocktail of sedatives and cocaine. One of his two housekeepers found his body, and each was bequeathed £50,000 by McQueen in his will.

But the designer also loved his three dogs- Minter, Juice and Callum- and and left £50,000 per pup from his £16,036,500 to be set aside in a fund for their lifelong care. ($82,000 in US Dollars.) The remaining bulk of McQueen’s fortune went to several charities:

Four charities – The Terrence Higgins Trust, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the London Buddhist Centre and the Blue Cross sick animal centre in Burford, Oxfordshire – have received £100,000 each.

The designer left the remainder of his estate in a trust for his Sarabande charity, which shares a name with his spring/summer 2007 collection famous for including a dress adorned with fresh flowers.

It’s believed that the hugely successful fashion maven (known as “Lee” to family and friends) was experiencing tremendous work pressure and buckled under the stress of his mother’s passing. An inquest noted a single message from McQueen inscribed on a book found near his body: ”Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you, Lee.”

Piers Morgan on offensive in latest hacking charge

0

Piers Morgan is on the offensive after yet another claim he’s involved in the British hacking scandal.

The latest hit: A 2009 interview with the BBC where he addressed shady practices on Fleet Street. “My answer was not specific. . . but a general observation about tabloid newspaper reporters and private investigators,” the CNN host said in a statement Wednesday, again denying he ever hacked a phone or published a story obtained from hacking.

He also took several swings, via Twitter, at the people he believes are responsible for dragging his name into the mess: “I don’t mind being wrongly smeared with all this #Hackgate stuff, I’d just rather it wasn’t done by liars, druggie ex-bankrupts and conmen” and “I’ll be making no further comment on this #Hackgate nonsense. But important for everyone to know exactly who these lying smearers are.”

Maria Shriver starts renovations on new $10m home

0

Washington, July 28 (ANI): Maria Shriver has started renovations on a new 10 million dollar home in Brentwood, Calif., though it is not know when she will be moving in.
Shriver, 55, had been busy with her 13-year-old son Christopher, who was released from the hospital on Monday after a serious boogie-boarding accident, and did not have time to check on the remodeling progress of the home.
"Maria is eager to move into the new home but they're still doing construction on it and she's put it on the backburner lately because Christopher is her priority," Radar Online quoted a source close to the situation as saying.

"There's still a lot of work to be done on the home, but Maria's eager to get in so she can settle into her new life without Arnold," the source revealed.
Renovations on the home are expected to take nearly three months to complete, so according to the insider, Shriver hopes her divorce with Arnold is complete by then too.

Emma Stone in talks for gangster film?

0

You’d think Emma Stone would be preoccupied, what with appearing in and promoting three summer blockbusters, but the bottle ginger is looking ahead.

Stone is in talks to play the female lead in the 1940s crime drama “Gangster Squad,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow film is set to star Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, who she appeared alongside in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” – out Friday.

The “Easy A” actress visited “Conan” on Monday to promote the film, which is fitting considering her character Hannah proclaims her love for the talk show host in the flick.

“Given the opportunity, yes, I would have his babies,” Hannah tells her friend, who nicknames the host “Conan Ginger Junk O’Brien.”

The actress also told Conan what happened when she and her mother sat near Brangelina at the Golden Globes. Her mom, who Stone said never drinks, filled up on champagne and asked the couple about their kids, adding, “They grow up so fast.”

Stone’s “The Help” hits theaters on August 10. She also appears in the Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis starrer “Friends With Benefits,” in theaters now.

Olivia Wilde turns to food not drugs

0

Olivia Wilde has joked self-medicating with food is a lot better than taking “crack cocaine”.
The Hollywood star, who is best known for her roles in TV drama House and 2010 science fiction film TRON: Legacy, split from husband of eight years Tao Ruspoli earlier this year.
The stunning star, who has been linked to a number of Hollywood hunks since the split including Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper, has admitted to comfort eating in the wake of the break up.
Despite having to wear her “fat jeans”, the 27-year-old laughed her eating habit is healthier than other habits she could have picked up.
“I got a divorce and self-medicated with food,” she said in an interview with Nylon magazine. “But I figure that's better than self-medicating with crack cocaine.”
Olivia has compared her new single status to coming out of a coma. The star, who married her lover in an abandoned school bus at the age of 19, insists she’s still getting to grips with the modern ways of communicating emotions.
“I see the whole thing like someone who's been in a coma and I've come out like, 'Wait, people text message? They text love? How do you text about love??’” she mused.
The American actress also admitted to having a crush on British hunk Daniel Craig. The two star alongside each other in upcoming movie Cowboys & Aliens, and Olivia says the actor, who is the most recent star to be cast as the iconic James Bond, is humble about his looks.
“He is so fine and he doesn't even know it,” she gushed. “He's such a goof, but he has a confidence that allows him to shine.

“I think that the reason that he redefined Bond is because he has a dirtiness to him. It looks like he has been in bar fights. He's windblown.”
Olivia also gushed about her other co-star Harrison Ford. The beauty says the veteran actor made her anxious whenever he was around her.

God particle, the Higgs boson, could be found in 2012

0

Scientists hoping to puzzle out how the Universe began will find a long-sought theoretical particle — or rule out that it exists — by the end of 2012, the director of the world's largest atom smasher predicted Monday.

Rolf Heuer, director of the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, said his confidence was based on the latest findings from the $10 billion proton collider under the Swiss-French border.

"I would say we can settle the question, the Shakespearean question — 'to be or not to be' — end of next year," he told reporters at a major physics conference in Grenoble.

IN PICTURES: The Large Hadron Collider

The Higgs boson isn't just any particle. It's the linchpin of the Standard Model of particle physics theory that explains the Big Bang, because it is believed to answer a fundamental question about why matter has mass. The particle itself is thought to give mass to other particles, and thus to objects and creatures in the Universe.

Heuer said these are "exciting times" for particle physicists because of the latest findings among two separate teams of scientists operating the Atlas and CMS detectors at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, that he directs.

Scientists are starting to pinpoint the precise level of high energy where the Higgs boson is expected to be found.

Last year, the collider for the first time threw together two proton beams, tiny particles traveling in opposite directions though a 17-mile (27-kilometer tunnel) at incredible speeds in conditions simulating those 1 trillionth to 2 trillionths of a second after the Big Bang. The crash on a subatomic scale is aimed more at improving our knowledge of how the universe was created than at finding immediate new technology uses to improve our lives.

The power produced has been ramped up to ever-new record levels this spring, creating reams of new data that requires endless monitoring and sifting. But to simulate the moments after the Big Bang nearly 14 billion years ago, the energy levels produced are potent only on the small atomic level.

The collider launched with great fanfare little more than three years ago. Nine days after its inauguration, the project was sidetracked when a badly soldered electrical splice overheated, causing extensive damage to the massive magnets and other parts of the collider some 300 feet (100 meters) below the ground.

It cost $40 million to repair and improve the machine. Since its restart in November 2009, the collider has performed almost flawlessly and given scientists valuable data. It quickly eclipsed the next largest accelerator — the Tevatron at Fermilab near Chicago.

"They have tested the Standard Model very well," Heuer said of CERN scientists. "They are now ready to bring us into uncharted territory. We are still missing the most wanted particle, the Higgs boson."

Fabio Zwirner, a physicist at the University of Padua, Italy, said there is "considerable excitement because of the many new results" at the conference, but physicists were still unsure whether they were seeing "hints" at finding the particle, or were running into statistical errors.

Kelly Rowland: Destiny’s Child Reunion Probably A Long Way Off

0

Kelly Rowland‘s new album Here I Am drops today, and last night she participated in a live Q&A with Billboard to discuss the record, its R&B/Hip-Hop chart-topper “Motivation,” and Destiny’s Child reunion rumors.

Rowland, thrilled at the success of “Motivation” (not only for its own sake, but because it signaled that the record would not be pushed back again, as it had last year), was breathless with praise for all of her collaborators, but especially for Lil Wayne’s verse on her single: “I literally was at a loss for words.” To hear Rowland tell it, her process in preparing the record was not dissimilar to Dr. Dre’s in preparing Detox (though she herself did not make that comparison). “The only thing that could have been holding me back would be myself,” she told Billboard.

As for the Destiny’s Child question? It’s already a Catch-22, because the only time a question like that can really be asked is when a member is in the early stage of promotion for a solo record (as Rowland is, here). A Destiny’s Child reunion is already not coming until the album cycles of Here I Am and Beyoncé‘s 4 are over. That said, Rowland wasn’t exactly making promises for the far future either. “To be honest with you—myself, Michelle and B—we haven’t talked about it. It has not come up in our conversations. We talk about everything else,” she said, insisting that they all remain good friends despite constant rumors of feuding, particularly between her and Beyoncé. In fact, she took the moment to stump for her sister-in-arms: “What kind of angers me a bit is just the fact that Michelle is in Destiny’s Child, too, and respect her and know that it’s three of us—it’s not two.” All in all, a well-handled response to an oft-asked question.
